Thermal shape-memory effect

Heating a deformed shape-memory alloy through its martensite–austenite transformation recovers strain and exerts large stress; cycling between a hot and a cold reservoir gives cyclic mechanical motion (the reservoirs are needed for heat-engine operation, not for a single recovery event).
