Vibration-driven elastocaloric cooler (proposed)

Mechanical vibrationElastic deformationMechanical stress or strainElastocaloric effectCooling

Ambient vibration stresses off-axis ferroelectric patches on a cantilever elastocalorically and periodic contacts carry the heat away — proposed and modelled by finite elements, never built. The genuine open question behind this route is whether ambient vibration supplies enough stress, timing and heat transfer for sustained cooling.

search for this exact route
Exact composition search: reviewed 2026-09-21 — partial; No demonstration known and none found: the only work that joins ambient vibration to elastocaloric cooling is the Kumar 2019 finite-element proposal the atlas already records as a proposed pathway; every elastocaloric experiment the forms return is loaded by a test machine or a designed actuator. Inconclusive as a route search until the Scholar and Semantic Scholar runs exist.

Steps

  1. 01
mechanical → mechanical · loss to thermal
    • cyclic deformation of an elastic member (a cantilever
    • a plate
    • a sheet) by base or inertial excitation; operation at a structural resonance amplifies the deformation but is not required
    solid
    refs [1] [2] [3]
  2. 02
    mechanical → mechanical
    • the deformed member carries a cyclic stress or strain state that can drive a stress-driven conversion (flexoelectric
    • elastocaloric
    • piezoelectric)

  3. 03
    mechanical → thermal
    • stress large enough to drive the martensitic transformation of a shape-memory alloy
